To celebrate St David’s Day in Wales, Mark will collaborate with the students in four sessions, each beginning with an audio-visual-based introduction from the tutor, followed by individual and group research tasks, and a collective discussion at the end so that students can present their findings and ideas. Students will be provided with a list of questions to research before the workshops, as well as a number of interactive quizzes.

00 – 9:40 History of Wales: We’ll investigate, together with Mark, five key dates or periods that have helped define the  Welsh nation, from the arrival of the Celts to the Roman invasions, and then from Henry VIII’s Act of Union to the eventual and recent establishment of a National Assembly for Wales in 1999.

00 – 10:40 Geography of Wales: We’ll look at the story behind the longest place name in Europe – Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch – along with the main cities, such as Cardiff, and how the landscape of hills and valleys, together with the presence of coal mines, has helped shape the character of the Welsh people.

00 – 11:40 Culture of Wales: We’ll focus on key figures from the worlds of music, sport, cinema, literature and politics, including Gareth Bale, Catherine Zeta Jones and Dylan Thomas, and how they represent Wales on the international stage.

00 – 12:40 The Welsh Language: Mark will help us establish the origins of the Welsh language and its current importance in Welsh society, and then hear it used a variety of everyday contexts, before actually learning how to say some important words and phrases ourselves. Croeso! Welcome to a nation at the same time close to and distant from the other countries of the British Isles …
