Richard Mullaney


Richard MullaneyRichard Mullaney is our very charismatic Irishman, who has been working with Learning Without Borders since 2008. After finishing college, studying Youth & Community Work, he started working full-time with Learning Without Borders providing a range of different talks and workshops whilst also performing in the Wild About Oscar play. Each summer he has worked for a variety of summer schools in both Scotland and England as part of the Activities team management. This has included running Ceilí dances, Discos, as well as excursions to various cities. In Ireland, he also worked as a restaurant manager in one of Dublin’s busiest bars, House Dublin. He has performed in Poland, Italy and Estonia. Outside of work, Richie is a human rights activist, in particular supporting homosexual couples’ rights and initiatives such as Gay Pride.

Let’s get back to the Beatles! Every person in the world would recognize the medleys of „All you need is Love,” „Help,” „Penny Lane” and so many other timeless hits! Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band has been around for 50 years! But in a world of Biebers and Britneys, do students know the journey it takes for an artist’s music to become timeless? As a Beatles fanatic since 11-12 years old, Richie will tell the true story of the Beatles; from John and Paul as 15-year-old teens starting a band, to the band break up in 1970, with everything in between, from Germany to London to Rishikesh and back. Students will be introduced to short extracts of rare footage and music to get a real grasp of the impact the Beatles laid upon the globe over 10 short years.

Ceilidh Dancing

The word Ceilí or Ceilidh (Scots Gaelic) means ‘companions’ and this famous form of cultural dance brings together hundreds of people in easy-to-learn steps. Richie will involve ALL students in a few of the most popular numbers, giving students a taste of Ceilí and only taking a small break to learn a little of Riverdance, one of the fastest forms of dance in the world! Richie has facilitated Ceilí workshops for 8 years now and in countries all over Europe with students from many different cultures and backgrounds. This is a particularly great experience for students of a younger age, or student’s first interactions with a native English speaker.

Children’s Day is celebrated every year in many places around the world to honour children globally. We celebrate this wonderful day by playing games in English. Play is the most comfortable form of learning for both children and adults because it is a natural behaviour that is driven by curiosity and creativity. The hands-on, interactive games inspire children to make discoveries about their world using play experiences. Our interactive English activities pique their interest, increase self-esteem and encourage subconscious language learning through fun and laughter.

Egg tapping, egg dancing, egg rolling, egg tossing, egg painting, egg hunting. From the coral reefed coast of Oz to the Pacific coast of the U.S.A with the old cousin countries of Ireland and Britain in between everybody is going egg crazy with egg games at Easter – and not just the English speaking world! You can find many of these games played by other European countries that share a history with them too. Richie Mullaney will facilitate the most popular Easter time games, proving a treat for your students!

You might think “Halloween” is just a daft American tradition, however it has a much richer history than that. Halloween began in Ireland over 2,000 years ago in ancient Celtic Ireland. Richie tells the story of Halloween and we will find out about some of the games and traditions and how they came to be. Students will have an opportunity to do some apple bobbing and other Halloween activities!

New Year’s Celebrations

The New Year isn’t just about what you do on New Year’s Eve it’s also about a whole host of other celebrations that span the first month of the year, January. Celebrations which also come from the various different cultures around the British Isles and come under different names from different languages will also be explored. Among others, we will enjoy the singing and dancing of Scottish Hogmanay with “Auld Lang Syne” and learn the correct Scottish way to do it. We will step back in time and find out about some of the older traditions as well.

Teenage English is a workshop on how teenagers communicate, and proven to be one of our most popular themes over the past few years. It’s a chance to cover some slang and expressions that signal one’s belonging to a certain age group, ethnic group, social class or subculture. Richie will explain the differences between words like mate, pal, buddy, blood, bruv; look at some YouTube examples and get engaged in reproducing and acting out teenage conversations together. We’ll also cover text talk used on Facebook, MSN and WhatsApp.

A little sneak peek at the agenda: we’ve got cheese rolling, Morris dancing, pancake racing and gurning! Hogsmeade and Beltane… What are these? Let’s get a closer look at Britain! Students will get a more detailed view of the predominant sub-cultures of Britain; what makes a brummie differ from a scouser? Or a geordie from a cockney? With Richie we’ll play around with the different accents and slang terms used around the British Isles and take a closer look at the cultural differences too. This is a great session, which will help students prepare for their first trip to Britain, as well as improving their accents!

Britain like many countries in Europe has a rich history of multiculturalism partly growing from the ashes of its once fading empire which has now ceased to be. But what has grown from those ashes is a country rich in variety for anybody visiting or living there, from the allure of the Asian restaurants to the globally famous multicultural festivals and many more examples to be seen. With Richie Mullaney, we will see how it has affected our day-to-day life with its connection to language and how we use it. We will learn about political correctness; what is it? The correct terminology for the different ethnic groups, see how their language has been borrowed and now accepted as English and the vast collection of different cultures this language has come from.

The Life and Times of William Shakespeare

In this session, Richie will give students a clear vision of the times of Shakespeare and his life, which will help students understand the language of Shakespeare. However, in keeping with his style, Richie will also entertain the students by summarising some of Shakespeare’s masterpieces. It is the 400-year anniversary of William’s death so let’s bring him back to life!

It has proven to be a lot of fun for students and really gives students a boost of confidence!

Ireland 1: Traditional Ireland

Richie Mullaney will take students on quick journey through 10,000 years of Celtic history and describe in full detail the strange cuisine. He’ll explain the much misunderstood “drunken Irishman” stereotype and pub culture and students will also learn about Irish food and drink and The Irish language of Gaelic, among a variety of other topics. Ireland 2: Young People in Dublin

The Ireland 2 session is aimed at teenage students. Richie will describe the different youth cultures of Ireland, interacting constantly with the students on a comparative level. The aim is to give the students an idea of similarities and differences of teenage life abroad and the different levels of acceptance and diversity within the Dublin class structure. He will teach the students some of the famous vocabulary of Ireland used by teenagers so students learn how to converse like a local in Dublin’s fair city of the Emerald Isle!

The Life and Times of Oscar Wilde

The event is devoted to the life and the writing of Oscar Wilde and gives the opportunity to find out more about the times he lived in, and the times he was imprisoned and exiled in. We will also learn about his studies at Trinity College Dublin as well as Oxford University, his marriage, his London life and his Paris death. This is also a chance to learn more about his writing style, the Picture of Dorian Gray, The Importance of Being Ernest, and The Ballad of Reading Goal. Last but not least we will take a  look at some of his most famous quotes, like: “The world is a stage, but the play is badly cast.”
