10:00 – 10:40 The British Royal Family
11:00 – 11:40 The English Language: Queen’s English
12:00 – 12:40 Kings and Queens of 15 Commonwealth Realms

King Charles III’s coronation will take place on Saturday 6 May 2023 at Westminster Abbey in London. During the ceremony, the King will be crowned alongside Camilla, the Queen Consort. To help gain a better understanding of British culture, Thomas will collaborate with the students in four sessions, each beginning with an audio-visual – based introduction from the tutor, followed by individual and group research tasks, and a collective discussion at the end so that students can present their findings and ideas. Students will be provided with a list of questions to research before the workshops, as well as a number of interactive quizzes.

9:00 – 9:40 King Charles III and Camilla, Queen Consort of the United Kingdom: Who are they? Where did they go to school? Who have they married? Their whirlwind romance? We will gossip a bit, but also try to see beyond the official masks and see what King Charles and his wife are like as people, and what they deeply care about. Finally, we will gain a better understanding of what realms King Charles III has become the king of Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, The Bahamas, Belize, Canada, Grenada, Jamaica, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent, and the Grenadines, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu and of course the UK.

10:00 – 10:40 The British Royal Family: This will be a chance for us to find out more about members of the current royal family in the UK. We will recap what is known through newspapers and media coverage, as well as look for skeletons in the closet. We will reflect on whether the British royal family is really British, or maybe German or Greek. Finally, together we will explore the concept of monarchy and ponder on the benefits and drawbacks of the UK being one. How long will it remain a monarchy? Two, twenty, a hundred more years? Will the UK ever become a republic?

11:00 – 11:40 The English Language: Queen?s English

What is Queen’s English? What is Received Pronunciation? What accent do we want to adopt when we learn English? Who do we want to sound like? Thomas will help us answer those questions and understand the diversity of accents across England and within the UK. This will be a very practical session in which you get to speak with the RP accent like the royal family, but also like a Northerner, a Glaswegian, and a Geordie. It will be fun.

12:00 – 12:40 Kings and Queens of 15 Commonwealth Realms: We’ll investigate, together with Thomas, the key dates that are important in British history, and look at the periods when England was ruled by kings and queens. We will also try to understand how  King Charles III became king of 15 Commonwealth realms: Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, The Bahamas, Belize, Canada, Grenada, Jamaica, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, and of course the United Kingdom. Crazy, right?
